How do I change my tax status from self employed to employed?
I'm no longer working for myself, and now have a full time job. But I am still registered as self-employed. How do I change this?

You need to contact your local tax office in the UK, and inform them that you are no longer self employed, and you`ll need to sign a declaration stating this.

Unfortunately though, it should be really easy, but the tax office are so inefficient it takes a lot of nagging to get them to change their records.

Myself, and a number of other people I know have had huge problems changing status. Even after signing the declaration, they keep sending you tax returns, which even though you are no longer self employed, you still have to fill in. Took 2 years before they stopped sending these out to me, even though they could see I was in full time employment by my tax payments, and payments from my employer.

You will need to draw up your final accounts and complete a self assessment for the final year of trading. You will need to write in very big letters on the back of the form that your self employment has ceased and pelase can they remove you from the self assesment system. the SA system is very formal and you need to completely draw a line under it. A phone call cannot replace a completed form in the eyes of HMRC.
Regarding your new job, you should have completed a form P46 when you started and you should sign this to say its your only or main job. You may need to be on emergency code while your self employment is finalised, but as you dont say when one ended and the other began, I can't advise more.

contact your local tax office they will need to know your NI number and when you changed from self employed

when you complete your next tax return and accounts, there is a box on the sefl emp pages to put a date in that you ceased self employment. until then, dont worry about it.

in the mean time, phone the Revenue to get the Class 2 National Insurance cancelled as you dont want to over pay.

just means on your next tax return you will have to disclose both self emp and employment income.

your employer will not do this for you so dont listen to some of the advice above.

Ring your local tax office and inform them. You'll probably need National Insurance number handy too. Alternatively, try visiting your local tax office if there is one near by.

Ask your employer to get in touch with the tax office and they will sort it out, it may take a while to sort out so make sure you put some money away to pay any outstanding tax that may accrue in the meantime. The tax office will write to you to confirm your new employment status and new tax code.

The last answer made me chuckle (about the nagging required etc), but unfortunately has a ring of truth to it.

The problem is really down to the number of computer systems in use by HMRC (many, many more than you would think), and that most of those systems don't 'talk' to each other, or do, but don't tell the other system everything it needs to know.

That means it is down to a human to know what needs to be done, and I am afraid that in HMRC these days, humans are one thing that is rapidly becoming short in supply.

The PAYE side of things for your new employment should get up and running without a great deal of trouble, but as said already you will need to make sure the Self Assessment side gets closed down properly.

What you need to do is this: complete and send off your last SA tax return (that may not actually be sent out until April if you have only just ceased self employment). Attach a letter to it explicitly stating that you have ceased S/E and the date that happened and who you are now working for. Now I know these details will be in the return itself, but what should happen is the letter will be detached and read by a human, whilst the return is simply keyed into a computer.

Give it 3 months, and then phone up the office mentioned on the front page of the Tax Return you sent off (so keep a copy). The SA system needs to be amended to reflect that the last tax return to be issued was (say) 2007/08. If that bit isn't done then you'll be sent another tax return the following April.

Don't neglect your National Insurance either. You are probably paying Class 2 NICs of about £2.20 per week which should stop if you are no longer S/E. Yes, that has a different computer system too, so if you run into difficulties, contact the NI Office on 0845 91 54655. You will need your NI Number handy.

THE FORMS YOU USE SPEAK FOR THEMSELVES.
You will discontinue using schedule C and switch any employee related expenses to Form 2106 (2106 EZ if none employer reimbursed expenses on auto) is what we use in the USA.
Reporting a change would really foul up the IRS incoming phone lines since we Americans add a job, lose a job , start a business, fail in a business. I'm no CPA, but could have been. Verify this
info in last year's booklet you filed. It discusses all related forms for SE or Employees. Thanks for perking me up.
