Puzzled
How do I claim back overpaid tax? I want to claim for professional subscriptions and laundry expenses.?
I work for the Health Service and am allowed tax relief on my professional subscriptions and laundry expenses. I know that you can claim these back retrospectively and there is a company willing to do it for me for a cut of 40 pence in every pound reclaimed. Does anyone know how to do it independently? I don't want to give someone else my money!

Dont use this company, you can claim this back yourself. Find out which area deals with your PAYE payroll, then write a letter detailing what you want to claim for each yr, giving amount per yr you wish to claim for prof sub and whom its pd to. If you dont know which area deala with PAYE, send to your local tax office.

To reinforce what rory says - you dont need to self assess - just write a clear letter setting out your claim. You can go back 6 years prior to the current year.
On no account pay someone else to do this!

A letter is fine or you can complete a P87 form (Tax relief for expenses form) for each tax year that you can download from HMRC website.

For health care staff there is an agreed flat rate expense (FRE) of £70 that covers laundry expenses (this has increased for the 2008-2009 tax year) and also a shoes and tights allowance of £18 that you can claim for tax relief (shoes and tights tax relief is for hospital staff only).

Regarding professional subscriptions (PSUB) if you can find the organisation on list 3 (a list of approved bodies) and this subscription relates to your line of work then you can claim tax relief on this subscription.

Please note that you can claim back last six years but you are too late for the 2001-2002 tax year as the deadline was 31 January 2008.

I must re-iterate the above comments that there is absolutely little benefit in having an agency do this work for you and absolutely no need for self assessment tax returns.

In UK ring your tax office they have forms (suprise, suprise) for this.

I think you will find that the £18 expense allowance for shoes and tights went up to £25 some years ago, but it can only be claimed by nurses, not other healthcare workers. Revenue rules are quite strict on this.
You can claim professional subscriptions to certain professional bodies, they have to be on the Revenue approval list, and the nature of your employment has to meet the criteria.
Your laundry allowance is officially known as Fixed Rate Expenses, and is union agreed. To the poster who told you not to be silly, it can be given to a taxpayer who has to wear a uniform or logo-ed clothing at work, that couldn't be worn in private life. The terms of employment must say that you have to launder the clothes at your own expense, and your employer does not provide facilities for you to do this at work.
Do NOT go to one of those thieving 40% taker agencies. Write to the tax office shown on your last form P60. If you worry about forms P87, you will have to do one for each year. I wouldn't bother.
Get your claim in before 5th April. If you don't, the earliest year will be out of date, and you will lose it.

What I usually do is put in a claim chit every month. Then at the end of the fiscal year you have all your 12 chits together and it will be deducted from your tax.

Good luck :)
