There are a number of reasons why you might be due a rebate:
+ Earning less than 5035 pounds in a tax year
+ Travelling abroad.
+ Working part time
+ Only working part of a tax year
+ Changing jobs through the year
+ Paying emergency tax
You can either apply to the Inland Revenue which can be a bit time consuming, as they tend to throw you from pillar to post with forms and applications to fill in.
Alternatively you can use a service such as http://www.TAXFIX.co.uk who will get your tax back for you. Generally using a company will be quicker and you will probably get more. I know that http://www.TAXFIX.co.uk operate on a no rebate no fee basis so you don't need to worry. |

it shoud be done automatically but it will help if you take all the details you have to the local tax office and talk it thru with them.
if you're unemployed and receiving job seekers benefit then it will happen a lot quicker. when i was i recieved all my tax back only a week into new tax year. |

Either the job centre or the tax office will help you, but don't forget, you can claim back any overpayment of tax for the past 6 years!. |

Sometimes they send you a letter saying you may have over paid and how to claim it back, but I think that's sent at the end of the financial year. Otherwise you could try phoning or going to your local tax office. My friend had hers automatically paid back but that's because she was paying emergency tax when she started her new job after coming home from working abroad. |

You may not get it back. I have been in the same boat and applied for a refund and got nothing back at all. |

You can do it through the jobcentre, but it would be better if you dealt with your local tax office.
Go and speak to the horses mouth so to speak.
Take no notice of Mr Finance, we at the Revenue will not pass you from pillar to post and it is not time consuming.
Usually things can be sorted with a 30 min interview, providing you have all the necessary information (ie P45's P60's etc) to hand.
Find your local office at the link below. |
