The relevant forms can be downloaded from www.hmrc.gov.uk, there's also a calculator to see how much you are due back - http://stccalculator.inlandrevenue.gov.uk/UserDetails.aspx
The website should also let you know where you need to send the forms to, which will depend on where you live in the country.
Assuming all you are claiming back is income tax paid on wages/salaries the forms should be straightforward, so you shouldn't need an accountant.
Unsurprisingly, you will probably have to wait quite a few weeks to get your money back. |

I seen something a while back on the STATRAVEL.co.uk website where they show you how to claim your taxes back, however I think the deadline passed. It may be worthwile checking with the local government website and phoning them up and providing you with a form to fill out to reclaim your tax back. Im sure it can be done, you just need to research.
Click the link below, and that will take you to the Government website and or the TAX section. Download the neccessary forms and wait for a response.

get a reputable accountant as there are things that are needed to be done, associated with your first tax year. They can offer a lot of good advice, and you can claim their bill off against your next tax year.
Doing your own books is the cheaper option, but not the wisest one |

well iam an expat working here in UK and i claim a refund but i was on emergency tax code and it was not a full financial year..you need to write and inquire together with your p60 or any tax document you have...and i know somebody that they also send their pay slip to their local tax office. |

If you have not been working for a full financial year you should not have paid tax - you can only be taxed on what you have earned. If you are self employed and you submit your self assessment at the end of the year this will prove that you have had no income. If during this time you were claiming unemployment benefit this is taxed at source and you will be entitled to a rebate at the end of the tax year, this will be sent to you automatically. Do your own books (do them weekly, don't let it build up), then give them to an accountant at the end of the year, they know all the ins and outs and if you can get anything back they will get it. They could end up saving you more than you pay them. Make sure you shop around, even the accountancy world has cowboys. |
