nancy p | How do I donate used clothing and obtain a receipt for tax purposes? |
|

If you're donating to a remote location (a Salvation Army bin, for instance) where there is not an attendant on hand to create a receipt for you, then you'll need to make your own itemized receipt detailing the items donated and their estimated value, and hold onto it for tax time.
Be aware, your prepared receipt will need to pass muster in the event of an IRS audit, so don't go crazy overestimating the value of the items donated -- remember Bill Clinton's $4 underwear? :-)
By the way, please don't be put off by others who castigate you for wanting to donate old unused items and getting a tax break in return. You're entitled to it and non profits obtain their status in order to encourage others to donate items, money and services to their organization. |

Take the clothing to any non-profit organization that accepts such donations and ask for a receipt. Generally, they will give you a dated receipt that you fill out yourself, stating the amount of clothing donated, and estimated resale value of the items. |

Take your clothing to a used clothing store such as "The Salvation Army" and request an itemized receipt. They will honor your request. |

get a pamphlet or voucher from the company or charity you donate the clothes to,,you will have to file on your 1040 or if you use turbo tax you will have to fill out a donation form and value it accordingly most of the time irs states you should value as what you would get at a garage sale,, be accurate,, so youll never be audited and make sure you have name and address of charity,,, i do to 3 or 4 a year,,, they love it,,, |
