How do I file taxes after not having a job for a year but had a baby?
Last year I had a baby, but I did not work for the entire year of 2007. I am wondering if I am still able to file a return and claim the baby and receive some kind of refund. I know I had no income, but I thought there might be something. Any help would be appreciated.

nope. Can't even file. hope you didn't have the baby for the credit. You get nothing.

I guess there's always welfare.

jseah114
If you earned no income, you won't file. Having the baby doesn't help you since the $1,000 child tax credit can only reduce your tax, but not below zero. The earned income credit is a refundable credit, but you have to have "earned income" during the year (as in employment wages) in order to claim it.

No income = No Refund.

acermill
If you had no income, you get no tax refund of any sort from the IRS. EIC is only for those who have a taxable income. Claiming a dependent only reduces your taxes, and you have no income tax to reduce. You already owe nothing.

Judy1
If you didn't have any income, then no you can't receive any tax benefit for the baby. Refundable credits for EIC and the Additional Child Tax Credit require earned income to be eligible.

chatsplas
NOPE. How could you receive a refund--return of money--if you earned nothing and paid nothing? No income, no need to file a return. Can't receive earned income credit without some earned income. That's the whole point, to help those working, trying to make things go for themselves. It's not welfare.

The whole point of filing an income tax return is to report income earned and account for taxes.

You will get nothing unless you worked

If you have no income/nothing withheld for taxes, you do not need file taxes. However whoever supported you can claim you both as dependents and get exemptions of $6400, child tax credit of $1000 and file Head of Household (standard deduction -$7850) etc.,
