alxsml | How do I file taxes on my babysitting job? |
I earned about $2100 last year babysitting for friends. I did not receive a W-2 from them. My tax software (TaxCut from HR Block) doesn't give me an option to add this wage without having a W-2. The only other option is to choose myself as a Household Employee but I have to make less than $1500 for that, and I made $2100. So... the questions are ...
Does my friend have to give me a W-2?
If so, how would he go about doing that if he doesn't have a EIN?
Can he use his SSN as his EIN?
If so, where does he have to go then to get official W-2 Forms to issue me? |

If you babysat in your friend's home, technically yes you should get a W-2 for it. But if you don't, you still need to file. You'll file it as self employment income. |

What you need is a 1099 not a W-2.
1099's are used for contractors, W-2's are for employees.
Anyway, He can use his SSN instead of an EIN number.
If he doesn't want to give out his SSN he can get an EIN number in about 10 minutes from http://www.irs.gov
I think he can also find the 1099 to fill out for you on the irs site as well..
Also like the poster above states you will state the income as being self employed. |

you report this income as cash earnings and report it on schedule C and the SE. My sister does child care and Im in the middle of doing her taxes for her. But that is definitely the form to report it on. You can do a mock tax report at several places like taxslayer or turbotax to compare it to the tax service you are currently using. If you do this make certain you go through the irs.gov website and if your income is under a certain amount then it will be free.
Good luck |

Are you trying to maximize your income in order to qualify for a house or something? If so, then take it on sch c, but if not, then I would consider it "under the table money". If you don't claim it (and the payer claims it), then you could get in trouble, but if they aren't planning on claiming it, then I wouldn't either. |

Why do you want to claim an additional income of $2100? Do you want to send money to the government for Social Security and Medicare? Those taxes are in excess of 13%. Your friends cannot deduct their payments to you without proper documentation, which include forms they must obtain from the IRS.
I admire your honesty, however, unless you need to show a certain income to qualify for some government program, I can think of no good reason to go out of your way to pay taxes. |

You will file your taxes as self employed. Enter 2100 under gross receipts on Schedule C and see if you have any deductions you can take to lower your income. After amount after any deductions is your net income. This is the amount you will pay self employment tax on. This tax is figured on Schedule SE. Your net income from Schedule C is transfered to your 1040. Half of your self employment tax is transferd to the 1040 as an adjustment and also on the 1040 under the tax section as taxes owed. |

You wouldn't get a w2, maybe a 1099.
Why not let sleeping dogs lie. Have you heard of the underground economy? |

It's a little more complicated than your friend buying the form W-2 filling it out. He has to be registered a tax paying entity and should have witheld taxes from you as an employee. If you were an independent contractor, then you either get a 1099 from the person who hired you or you claim it as misc income, or dont claim it at all. As an independent contractor you can deduct expenses. |
