How do I fill out form w-4p?
I am receiving an inheritance from my Grandma. The company sent me a form W-4P to fill out. I want to fill it out in a way so that I will not have to pay a big chunk of taxes at the end of the year. I would like them to withhold enough NOW, so I won't have to pay LATER. So, I am unsure how to fill out it.

Specifically, I am unsure about line B. It says enter "1" if you have a pension. I don't have a pension now, so by "pension", do they mean the money that is coming to me? Would that be considered a pension?

Other details: I am single, head of household, I have no children or dependents, and no one can claim me as a dependent.

Here is a link to the form for quick reference: http://docs.google.com/viewer?a=v&q=cache:GwBsXPc9nXcJ:www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/fw4p.pdf form w-4p&hl=en&gl=us&pid=bl&srcid=ADGEESgr916WoCwydMaoeRlLcGJ34jcSlqE5QfslVlQQvawxd0XM3tMVl-b2nV0e4PK3oDDP6f-dkr2WyIbCppKpjf2oGRQkNFSdFyFQDdnwuSwi1MQJyuBbs_DjoGJRM26IFuiYR0SB&sig=AHIEtbQ1BPtM0GB5L3C3mWoDIcS6SM4qBQ

inheritance is not taxable unless it is to the state you live in
and of course, it is not a pension
if you like, have them withhold 10 or 20%, depending on the amount of the inheritance and when you file your taxes, very likely you will be refunded the major portion on it, all dependent on your overall total gross income

Dear Raz: Get some help on this one.

You state you are single, no kids but claim head of household, who do you claim?

Sounds like you should fill out your form as single "0"

Normally an inheritance is not taxable. What are you inheriting?

This advice was prepared based on our understanding of the tax law in effect at the time it was written as it applies to the facts that you provided. Click on my profile to read more. Errol Quinn Enrolled Agent

I am assuming you are inheriting some type of tax-deferred account such as a 401(k), IRA or annuity.

There is a line where you can just state the percentage you want withheld. For this you need to know what tax bracket you are in with this income included. You are single for tax purposes so use that chart at www.irs.gov. You do not qualify as Head of Household.

Unless you are a high income person or this is a very large amount of money, I'd suggest having 25% withheld for federal income tax. Your other option (if you can't figure this out from the tax rate chart) is to consult a tax professional, such as an Enrolled Agent.
