Hello,
The answer is you would have to register with the inland revenue inorder to be given a VAT number.
**However, be aware that although you can voluntarily register for VAT "But" its often NOT worth doing for a small business unless your annual turn over leaves you with (I think its?) more than £36,000 profit at the end of your trading year/accounting period.
**NOTE: Your company has to be VAT registered above a certain financial threshold (I think?) its over about £47,000 unless thats changed recently.
**ALSO, note VAT and the paperwork that this involves can be a real nightmare, you have to keep track of ALL your paid out VAT and the VAT you've had to add on to clients or customers when they purchased from you.
**The VAT paper work has to be done every x3 months & this can add a significant extra burden on a new business or small business (if you dont have a book keeper for example).And if your NOT very accurate with your record keeping there is always the risk of ending up owing money to the IR for unpaid VAT too.
**My honest advise to you is think very carefully if you really need to become VAT registered in the first place.

V A T numbers are issued by the Customs & Excise office. There should be a number you can call in the general area where you reside. I would add that, a person once told me that the customs & excise have powers equal if not superior to the police. |
