It depends on the taxation guide for the year.
An example for 2006/2007
Income Tax - PAYE
Personal Allowance in 2006/2007 £5,035 (for those under 65 years) must be be deducted from gross income before taxation.
On taxable income, here at the taxation levels
£2,150 taxed at 10%
Income from £2,151 to £33,300 is taxed at 22%
Income above £33,300 is taxed at higher rate of 40%
National Insurance paid by employees is 11%
while employers pay 12.8%
For the most up to date rates for this year, please contact Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs at http://www.hmrc.gov.uk
You don't have to do the calculations yourself.
You can outsource the work and get it done for you for about £10 per employee per month.
Hope that helps.

The inland revenue do have a helpline for new employees and they will probably have sent you tax tables for the 2007-2008 tax year.
My recommendation would be to buy software like Sage (which is what I use) but in a nutshell these are the principles.
1) Each person is allowed a tax-free allowance for the full year. This equates to a certain amount of 'free pay' up to each tax month/ week. The amount depends on their Tax Code.
2) You then work out the total taxable pay (total pay - free pay)and then look up the total tax due on the total taxable pay for that month/ week.
3) You deduct the total tax due from the tax paid by your employee to the end of the previous period - and that is the tax you will have to pay (by the 20th of the next month)
4) With regards to NI you have to check that the employee is earning above the LEL and then deduct the appropriate NI rate from your employees GROSS earning i.e. BEFORE you deduct income tax. This is the Employees contribution. You also have to work out the Employers Contribution.
My father used to have to take several days to work out amounts in days before computers - I take about 1 hour for 30 employees (and most of that is creating the BACS schedule for the bank!) |
