bmspelvis | How do taxes work for money made with Paypal? |
I've heard of 2011 as when things are going to change... just an overall explanation of tax implications of making money online would be great. |

Paypal is just a method of payment.
If you make money online, you must report it the same as any other income must be reported. |

The tax implications of making money online will be the same as the tax implications of making money any other way. Officially, this was already the case. The only thing that will be changing is the reporting requirements, to make it easier to catch anyone not paying the tax that was already required before the change. |

Generally "PayPal" is a means by which one person pays another person or company for services or goods acquired online. If you are receiving funds for either goods or services it is possible if not likely that such an activity would result in a tax liability of some sort. If there is a tax liability from a given activity that tax is due regardless of the means by which the proceeds changed hands. The change you refer to in 2011 is a result of the government making assertions that they plan to crack down on those making money over the internet for activities that would be taxable. At the present time there are very few regulations in place to allow the government to track this type of transaction. That will change in the future, particularly given the increase of internet commerce. That said you may wish to come to an understanding that any online business activity is just as taxable as business conducted in a traditional arena. |
