•µ Mæ Fσяget Mε Nøw• | How do you calculate sales tax in your head? |
i know how to do it on a calculator but whats an easy, accurate way to do it quickly in your head? Sales tax here is 6%. Thanks! |

Exact answer: multiply the price by 6. Drop the last two digits and move the decimal point two places left. For example, if something costs $1.50, then 150*6=900, so the tax is $0.09.
Estimate: Divide in half four times. For example, if something costs $16, then 16/2=8, 8/2=4, 4/2=2, and 2/2=1, so tax is approximately $1. (Actual tax is $16*.06=$0.96.) |

Just deal with the easy numbers. Take a tenth of your total, which is easy, then take 60% of that number which will be 6% of your total. If 60% is too hard to figure out then just take 50% (half, of course) which is easy then you know it will be slightly more than that. |

unless you're quick in your head, it would most likely have to be an estimate.
Base what it is off of a number you know, like $10, $50 or $100.
If you're buying something that's $12, you can do the math that for $10 tax would be .60 cents...for $1 it's .6 cents. So for a $12 item it would be .60 + .06 + .06 = $12.72 |

six times the number of dollars the item cost will give you the tax in cents. a $20.00 item would be 20x6 or 120 which equals $1.20 in sales tax. |

If your sales tax is 6%, I think I would think roughly what 10% is (easy enough right) and split that in half. Your answer plus a little bit should be pretty good. |

For your example it's simple...just remove the percent sign put a zero in front of it and a decimal. Consider percents like money. 50¢ is just 50% of a dollar, 25¢ is just 25% of a dollar. ( .50 and .25) 6% is .06 (6¢) of a dollar. So you would be paying 6¢ on each dollar. Or if it is a 6% discount on a purchase, you'd get 6¢ OFF the price for each dollar of the actual cost. I hope this was helpful. :) |

Its 6 cents per dollar and round to the nearest ten dollars for a good estimate. |

6 x 1.00 = 1.06, 6 x 2.00 = 2.12 etc. just multply the dollar x 6 and thats the sales tax. |
