How do you claim tithes on your tax returns?
I gave over $1,750.00 in tithes and offerings last year. Is that enough to claim as a deductible? Will it even be beneficial if I do?

You can do this if you have prrof of the donation, either a receipt or cancelled check. You must have one or the other. Secondly, this will only be of value if you itemize deductions rather than taking a "standard" deduction.
Here's a link to an IRS publication re: deducting charitable contributions if you want more info.

contributions line of Schedule A for itemized deductions - if your total item ded are less than the standard deduction, then you get no tax benefit for the contributions

You can claim any amount, provided you have receipts to back up your claims.

The IRS is really looking at contributions now. It was seen as a loophole for reporting losses, so now its on their radar. It's also a red flag for auditing.

On Sch A as contribution. Yes if you itemize it will help you a lot.

Your church should give you a yearly statement of what you have given over the year. Use that number to claim your deduction. Every little bit helps.

If your religious group gives you receipts for tax purposes.
If not, perhaps they have no tax status. Ask them this question before giving if it really matters to you.

If you itemize, you claim them as charitable contributions. You only itemize if your total itemized deductions are more than the standard deduction that you are allowed - for 2007 that's $5350 if you are single, $10,700 for a joint return.

Yes it will be very beneficial to claim on your taxes...there should be area for "charitable donations" on your tax form.
