The answer to your question depends greatly on your financial situation. If you have a simple return with only W-2 income and you can use a computer fairly well, you could buy a tax program and do it yourself. If your return is at all complicated you should seek help from a tax professional. Not only CPAs qualify as tax professionals. Depending on the state you live in CPAs EAs and Certified Tax Preparers are all professional folks that can help you with tax issues. They will frequently save you more than you pay them. The federal tax code is something like 35,000 pages. If you do it yourself that is a lot of reading.

By myself....I am a CPA.

CPA for sure - I own rental properties - there's no way I could do it myself!

I used to file my own.
But due to my marriage and the 2 companies he owns, there is no way I would risk doing them myself.
So I hire a CPA.

My mom is an accountant - so she does my personal taxes for me. For my business, I hire a CPA. I could probably do my personal on my own. But I would never trust myself to do the business taxes - too much at stake.

If you have a simple Tax return then go to IRS.GOV and follow the links to do it yourself on line. However if it is a complicated hire an accountant. It will be worth it because they know all of the deductions and credits. Some that you may not even think of. Usually they will make you more money then you spend on them.
