I moved out of my flat yesterday as I could not stand one of my flatmates {she was really filthy and weird}. When I moved in I paid 1 months rent (£350) plus deposit (£350) so in total paid £700. H...

My fiance and I live together and both provide for our daughter (born in 2005). can we both claim her as a dependent since we both provide for her? Or can still only one of us claim her?...
The people aren't exceptionally well trained, they took a weekend class in how to use the tax software.
If your return isn't that complicated there is no sense in using them because you can use something like Turbo tax for free and then e-file for a minimum fee.
If your return is fairly complicated there is no sense to use them because they'll probably mess something up that a real accountant who would of only charged slightly more would of caught.
If you want a fast refund there isn't any sense in using them because they take such a large cut in their refund anticipation loans that its down right criminal. Even if you listen to nothing else in my answer at the very least look at the rate they charge you for the loan. Compare that to the APR on a credit card and you'll cry a little. The selling point is that its only a short term loan but if you charged some one that much intrest it would be considered loan sharking. Between e-filing and direct deposit I get my check in a week or less with nothing taken out.
All I've ever found with them or any other tax prepration service is negatives and very very very few positives (getting to walk around Sears while they do my taxes is the only one that comes to mind).

I think they do a good job. I know they require a lot of training for their preparers.

The quality of work that I've personally observed ran the gamut from very competent to grossly incompetent. The same goes for most of the storefront tax prep mills. The only thing that I can say about any of them is that they are consistently inconsistent.
If you have a complex return or are challenging a revenue ruling with your interpretation of the tax laws, don't even think of the tax prep mills. Seek out a CPA or EA who specializes in your type of tax issue. They will cost more but are worth every penny.

I don't use them..but if you don't have a ton of deductions..do your taxes for free at http://www.taxact.com
I use them every year and paid $20 for automatic electronic deposit.

No. I think they charge too much just to do federal and state taxes that you can probably do yourself. They take advantage of people. If your taxes are simple enough go to your local library or state building. They usually do it for free if you don't feel comfortable doing them yourself. If not that if you know someone that can do them for a small fee let them. Stay away from H&R Block.

If you have a fairly uncomplicated return, they are just fine. If you have a return that is complex with many deductions such as you would if you have self-employment income and expenses, I would highly recommend an accountant instead.

They are a very expensive service, as are most tax preparation services. Unless you have a complicated return, your big bucks ahead doing your own tax return.
