How do you find out if you are one of the select few getting an extra refund from the gov't in May?

The tax rebate is based on your 2007 earnings and Federal Income Tax liability.

You would be eligible to receive a rebate of up to $600 if you paid that much in Federal Income Tax. If you only paid $350 in taxes (less than the $600 rebate limit), you only get back $350. If you had earned income or social security of at least $3000, you would get at least the minimum rebate of $300. Similarly, couples filing jointly can receive up to $1200. If you qualify for a rebate, you will receive $300 for each dependent child under 17.

Use the Kiplinger rebate tax calculator (link below) to compute your rebate.

Uh, it's not a select few - it's most people who file a 2007 return. If you are a dependent, you don't get one. If your eligible income was under $3000 for the year, you don't get one. If your income is over $75K ($150K on a joint return) your rebate is reduced or eliminated.

Otherwise you most likely get at least $300, and maybe up to $600 if you paid over that in net federal income tax for the year.

It isn't all that few -- indeed, many millions of checks will go out. If you earned $3000 or more last year, you can get some; just be sure to file a tax return for 2007, even if you don't have any tax liability.

It isn't really a select few. If you file a tax return for 2007 make more than $3,000 or less than 75,000-- then you are good to go. Select few-- a majority of citizens in the US fall into this category.

What do you mean a select few? Well I know in California everyone that made over 3000 in 2007 is getting 600 back in May...

It's NOT a select few, at all.
Read the rules posted by IRS.
There's a select few who won't get it, ie., dependents, those not working, those taking welfare or SSI, those with no visibile means of support, those who don't file tax returns. In the latter category, some of them will qualify IF they file a 1040A stimulus return.

Select few? 130,000,000 checks covering over 200,000,000 people might be a "select few" in China with over 1,400,000,000 people but in the US it's a signifiant majority of the US poplulation.

If you want to learn if you're part of the "unwashed masses" receiving something, take your tax return and go here: http://www.irs.gov/newsroom/article/0,,id=177937,00.html
