How do you go about changing your Social Security Number? How much does it cost?

I have heard of the social security administration changing a social security number once. It was for a person who had been victimized repeatedly by identity theft by illegal immigrant workers. But normally, you can't change the social security number that you have been assigned. You can get a replacement card if you lose that, but not a replacement number.

Please ignore those who say you can't change your SS number ... they have no clue.

You can change it under a few special circumstances. If you are a victim of domestic violence, you can get permission.
http://www.ssa.gov/pressoffice/domestic_fact.html

If you've been a victim of identify theft, it's also possible, but not recommended.

There may be other special circumstances. Check with your local SS office.

There is no fee.

You would have to have a valid reason and even then the Social Security Administration will only change a number in the most extreme cases. It should not cost anything other than the cost of a new Social Security Card.

I am almost positive that's not possible at all.
It's your identifier and follows you around your whole life.
You would lose all your earnings info, etc.
I am thinking the only possible way is if you were in the witness protection program or something.

your social security number is like your birthday....once you have it is impossible to change....unless of course you are in the Federal Witness protrection program

traptjoshua
I believe that number is given to you at birth and you can't change it. It's like your bar code when you get made.

gitargal
I hate to break it to you but you only get one. It doesn't matter how much money you have.

Contact your local Social Security Administration office or do so online. It should be free.
What if my card is lost or stolen?
You can replace your card or your child’s card for free if it is lost or stolen. However, you are limited to three replacement cards in a year and 10 during your lifetime. Legal name changes and other exceptions do not count toward these limits. For example, changes in noncitizen status that require card updates may not count toward these limits. Also, you may not be affected by these limits if you can prove you need the card to prevent a significant hardship.

To get a replacement card, you will need to:

Complete an Application For A Social Security Card (Form SS-5);
Present a recently issued document to show your identity;
Show evidence of your U.S. citizenship if you were born outside the United States and did not show proof of citizenship when you got your card; and
Show evidence of your current lawful noncitizen status if you are not a U.S. citizen.
Your replacement card will have the same name and number as your previous card.
What does it cost?
There is no charge for a Social Security number and card.
