someone's no one | How do you save money when you are living paycheck to paycheck? |

Your cost of living is evidently too high for how much you earn. Look at day to day costs of living such as food, gas etc and see if you can reduce them by considering whether they are a need or just a want- spend on necessities only. Also evaluate whether where you live is too expensive and if it might be worth moving to a cheaper property. |

If you are living paycheck to paycheck it means that you are either in debt or living beyond your means. Therefore, your options are to pay off your debt or lower your standard of living.
The best thing to do is to make a budget and track every dollar that goes in and out. Prioritize and categorize your expenses as either mandatory or discretionary. Discretionary expenses (cable TV, Internet, dining out, etc) can be lowered or eliminated completely to give you more cash at the end of the month. |

Make sacrifices , from walking instead of driving , to cutting down on luxuries , like ciggies , and beer , |

I ALWAYS put something away OFF THE TOP of the paycheck. We tend to live up or down to the available resources so once you get in the habit of doing this you might be surprised to see your savings grow. Even if you only do 5%, that will help over the long run. Then any time you get a raise or a job that pays better, put 25% of the increase in pay in the bank AUTOMATICALLY.
I lived from paycheck to paycheck for many years as a young GI yet always managed to put away at least 5%. By the time I retired, I had well into 5 figures saved and owned several homes that I'd bought along the way. Never got blind-sided by an emergency that I couldn't handle, and now can say "Take this job and shove it!" without worrying about the consequences.
If you want to do it badly enough, you CAN do it. |

Start small, try cutting out expenses that you really don't need. Try to deposit $20-50 a pay check into your savings account. Hopefully $20 won't make that much of a difference, but it will slowly add up in your savings. |

It is tough, I know.
But look at this website:
Also look up your local Freecycle group on the web. I have got and given loads of stuff free via mine. |

I know you think it's impossible. The thing you have to change more than anything else is your mindset. You have to PAY YOURSELF FIRST and all the bills next. Even if that means only $5 - $10 a week at first. Never let a week go by where you don't put something away for yourself. It will start to add up even if you feel like it won't at first. |

try getting reusable items that are multipurpose and cutting down on the amount of luxuries that you buy. dont eat out as much and save gas by walking more. |

pull 25$-50$ a paycheck out in cash and stash it in a drawer. know that this money is only for saving/emergency. |

Not an easy question. I think a previous answer re standard of living may be close. But, I know it's a pain (UK expression), list all of your expenses, including small luxuries like cigarettes, candy, alcohol etc., and see if you can reduce or eliminate them. Run a smaller car, a diesel will pay dividends, and they make some very good ones these days.We can make our own beer here in UK so you may be able to do the same to economise!
Also if you can make sure when you shop that you buy wisely. Asda type stores for example, and hunt down the bargains every time you shop. Go for interest free purchases on larger items if you must buy them. Avoid interest charges entirely.
We have interest free promotions on credit cards here. If you are careful you can move from one offer to another and use their money without paying any interest. BUT you have to be very careful and well organised. I sympathise with you as I have been in the same situation. Unfortunately you can't get out of it quickly you just have to stick to the rules of economy and eventually it will improve. Good luck. |

I had the same problem. I am recently divorced and trying to get it together.
This is what I had to do a year ago. I am doing very well now and am happy with my situation.
1) I got a second job so that I only have one day off a week. My second job pays tips so I live off of them day to day. I use my main jobs paycheck for bills.
2) I pay my house bills a month late. I will wait until I get a bill with 2 payments and pay the latest one. I am always a month behind but they never shut anything off.
3) Get with a consolidation company. Usually they will screw you so stay on top of them. Unfortunately this is the only way most bill collectors will reduce your debt.
4) Let your bills go to collections. The collections company buys your debt at price that is less than your debt and in the end they really just want their money back. Be careful because if you let it go too long it will go to a law office and then you end up sued. Which will, in the end, give you more time to pay the debt anyway but you will also have to pay a lawyer and court costs and yuck!
5) Reduce your living expenses. Take the bus to work most of time, if you can. Kroger has the awesome $1 sales with their discount card (which is free). If you have to eat Tostino pizzas and Ramen for a month so be it.
6) NEVER stop looking for a better job where you will make money. If you are making ten dollars/hour and you find a job making $12 and then a month after you start that one you find one making $15 then go with the $15 one. DO NOT STOP LOOKING AND DOING until you are comfortable with your way of living.
7) Most importantly KNOW your finances. Know what you owe to who and make sure you keep very good records. |
