TallPaul is right. Simply subtracting 17.5% doesn't work:
£117.50 minus VAT would be £100.00 (£100.00 plus 17.5% is £117.50)
£117.50 - 17.5% =£96.94 which is incorrect. |

If it's a VAT inclusive figure you multiply by 7 and then divide by 47 |
|

TallPaul

Divide by 1.175. |

ok heres a simple way to do it.
47 = gross amount
40 = net amount
7 = vat amount
so £117.50 = 47 Gross Amount
. £100.00 = 40 Net Amount
. £17.50 = 7 Vat Amount
this is worked out by
117.50 / 47 * 40 = net amount = £100
117.50 / 47 * 7 = VAT amount = £17.50 |

Here's a calculator to do it for you:
http://www.taxcentral.co.uk/taxcentral/home/vat/vatcalculator/default.asp
You can't simply take away 17.5% because the total amount includes the 17.5% VAT - which isn't vatable (if you see what I mean!) |

The "VAT Fraction" is 7/47ths. Deduct this and it gives you the VAT amount |

Divide the number by 117.5 then multiply by 100 |

Difficult to know exactly what you want, but I hope this helps :
If the Total including VAT is £150 (for example)
And the VAT applied was 20% (for example)
Then the Total before VAT is (£150/120) * 100 = £125
And the VAT amount is 150-125 = £ 25 |

If VAT is 17.5% multiply sum including VAT by 0.1489.
If your starting figure is £100 multiply by 0.1489 result is £14.89 ie original figure is 85.11.
You can shuffle this by the odd penny to neaten things up ie 14.90 and 85.10. The Inland Revenue finds this acceptable. |

divide 17.5% = VAT - from figure |
|

janie

divide the amount (including VAT) by 1.175% that will give you the amount excluding VAT |

say £100 inc vat.
multiply by 17.5 and MINUS the answer.
100 -17.50 = 82.50 |

If using a calculator, multiply the number you want to reduce by 0.825.
If doing mental arithmetic, round the number to a whole number and divide by 100. Times that number by 17.5 to get the deduction and take that amount off of the original value. |

Deduct 17.5%. Multiply by 0.175 then deduct |

stormydays

you div ide the figure by 47 and times that result by 7 |
|

:)

i think it is divide or take away 17.5%
cant remember which :P |
|

andy k
 |
divide by 100, times by 82.5.
left with vat free figure |
|

andy g
|
divide the number by 100
then multiply it by 17.5
that gives you 17.5 per cent which is the rate of vat
trust me it's that easy
ignore the divide 117.5 number to hard the blokes a nanna got no idea |

Minus 17.5% |

On a calculator....Put in the figure....press minus....put in 17... ..press the percentage button.
Sorry...17.5 Getting old and don't keep up with tax hikes. |

Vat is charged at 17.5% on most goods that are VAT rated. Simply deduct 17.5% from the total cost and you have the vatless cost. |
