How do you work out the tax allowance for washing towels at home as I am self employed?
Spoke to self assesment help line and they said you need to work out how much your machine uses in water and electric for washing the work towels and then work the value out from your utility bill?

if you have a cleaning business then get with your taxadvisor on this .............

Write down the reading on your electric meter, do the wash, check your meter again and calculate the units it has used, then multiply that figure by the amount of washes you do per year. You did not say how many washes you do per day, so working out your water consumption is impossible. The average machine uses between 4 to 8 gallons per wash, depending on the cycle you pick. When doing your assessment remember that water also includes sewage charges. If your not on a water meter, estimate around 10 to 20% of your annual bill. regards...

Hard one this, but can you not also claim for using your home as a business, do you collect the towels or are they dropped off to you? What about soap powder and fabric softner? If you are running a business all of these can be claimed as expenses. If this is a legitimate business look into it properly because accountants cost you the earth and you can do it yourself, trust me. x

It's not worth it because the calculation is too complicated. Just ignore this deduction.

You need to calculate the electrical costs of running the washer yet somehow you need to excluse the lighting and other appliances running in your home. You then need to exclude your personal use of the washer. It's very complicated. Then you need to consider water as well.

To do it properly, get a second utility line (and meter) along with a dedicated washer for the business.

They will allow you to use a third party ie, a laundry and submit the receipt with your other business costs.

Go to your local self serve laundry center and wash a load. See what it cost you then figure 1/2 of that as actual cost. Usually $1.50 per load is a good average. Multiply that by the number of loads you do for your annual deduction.
