How does cauncil tax work?
Me my girlfriend and out best mate are planning on gettign a flat 2gethor..private rent. and we all have full time jobs.. the council tax for the flat is 120 pounds.. do we have to pay that amount each or not or what

alan v
I take it you mean £120 per month.
You will be responsible for a third, your girlfriend will be responsible for a third and your friend will be responsible for a third £40 per month each, thats an annual council tax bill of £1,440.
However, if one of you don't pay, they will come to all 3 of you to recover the money.

pickles
the council tax due is based on the property's value (different bands) if you live in the house alone you get a percentage off. Otherwise the amount due is split between occupants.

Princess Rebecca
The Council send you a horrendous bill which you have no choice but to pay. Only one per household so you are lucky that you can split it 3 ways.

normally all separately.. you probably get a letter each

IF all your names are on the tenancy agreement (which i suggest it should be)

depends on how the rent is set up , as i'm pretty sure the landlord can include that in your rent sometimes.

This is the total each month so just £120 between the 3 of you. You pay from April to April (tax year) and it changes every year with the budget.

nannywho
Check with your landlord. If that is the monthly tax, you would each pay a third of it. It is based on the value of the flat, not the number living there. Also, usually you pay the whole year's tax in ten monthly installments, so you should have two months without paying. Be sure to ask the landlord exactly what the arrangements are.

J
one per household, not per person.

Spike
Just the one £120 between you.The corrupt ones skim there's off the top themselves. Whats left over empties your bins. Do we pay 4 spell checking too on here It hurts my eyes will I be compensated ?

nightcrawler
In my area, the council tax for the whole year is spread over TEN monthly instalments, with no payment due in February or March.

You can find out from your local council how much your council tax bill is for the whole year (It is based on a notional, out-of-date value of the property, grouped into 'bands'). That way you can be sure you are paying the correct amount and not just what your landlord tells you it is.

bunnyxboo
per household every month.. i hate council tax ;-(

sh1tshockhorror
no, its split so 40 bucks each

of course you spelt it wrong...... but i will give you advice anyway, so council tax is on your "house" not on the person.. so you will ALL have to pay 120 pounds altogether and not each a 120 every month.
