For that sort of amount they will more than likely send you a cheque.

I agree with previous contributor 'C R.' The tax office will not advise you of an overpayment unless you completed a self-assessment Tax Return and did not tick the appropriate box instructing repayment. If this is the case just write to the tax office asking to release the money to you. However if you did not complete a Tax Return then you would not be advised that a repayment of tax is due unless it is the actual calculation you have received for which a cheque would be directly sent to you at your home address within 10 working days.

As there is a scam around at the moment DO NOT GIVE UP ANY BANK DETAILS. As previously advised contact your tax office to check authenticity of letter.

Steffi's comment below re amendment to Tax Return is incorrect. As already advised if your situation is relevant to self-assessment then write to your tax office requesting release of monies. Your Tax Return does not get 'amended' for this instruction.

Be aware that there are a number of '419 Advanced Fee' frauds going around .. (although theses usually arrive via SPAM eMail)

The common theme is that they promise you something (like a Tax Refund) but ask you to pay them something up front .. this could be via a Premium Rate phone number that you are expected to call ....

It does seem odd that you have overpaid by exactly a round sum like £2000. You haven't told us if you have any self-employment, or have to complete a Tax Return for any reason, although you mention a code number.
The only times you would get a notification like this would be if you didn't tick the box on a Tax Return to claim any repayment due, or, for PAYE, that you had moved address, and tax office didn't know your new one. The letter in the latter case would be sent via your employer, and would incorporate a claim form, so that you could give up-to-date details, and the repayment would be sent to your new address. You would normally be told whether your code number is to be altered, otherwise a cheque would have been attached to the letter you received. You do not have to accept a change of code number, and can ask for a lump sum repayment.
I guess this letter doesn't ask for details of your bank account as you do not know how you will receive any refund due.
If an overpayment is due on a Tax Return, and you didn't tick the box,and want your repayment, in effect you are making an amendment to the Return, which is a legal document. To get your refund, you would have to put something in writing for the amendment. Otherwise the money stays in your tax account to be set against any future tax liability.

I don't think the tax office would write to you to say you overpaid by that amount if they were not already dealing with the repayment or needed you to do something.

Are you sure the letter is from the tax office? Were you expecting the overpayment?

There have been fraudulent 'phising' emails going around telling people they are due a repayment but then asking for personal information.

I'd suggest you contact HMRC yourself to ask about the overpayment. There should be a telephone number on the letter, or call your local tax office & explain what you've received.

Hope you get a repayment soon - but you can't be too careful!!

Have you filled in a form to claim the tax? Any tax office will supply one.
They used to repay it in a couple of weeks, now it seems to be at least 2 months.
Usually repaid by cheque.

As it is such a large amount you will probably be given the choice of a lump sum or a tax code change for the coming year.
