You have $1000.

Give me $300

How did that help you?

Taxes in general play a role in the economy and building highways, and other projects.

Raising taxes is a sensitive issue. We pay the 2nd highest corporate taxes in the world, which places US companies at a disadvantage. Instead of reinvesting into the business and potentially employing more people, they give it to the government.

Higher taxes on business ALWAYS will get passed down to consumers in the form of higher prices.

Raising income taxes in a recession is dangerous because consumers will spend less because they are taxed more. We have a consumer driven economy that is based on how much we buy.

If we have less money, we buy less, and therefore that slows the economy like it is now.

If we are taxed more, we have less, we buy less, and therefore that slows the economy like it is now.

Raising capital gains taxes and taxes for people who make more money is also a bad idea.

Why?
1. Capital gains taxes will effect everyone who owns a mutual fund, a stock or any investment that is not held in a retirement account.

2. Raising taxes on the wealthy seems to impact only a small number of people, but this is a false idea. The wealthy which includes small business owners, large corporations, etc, invest money into businesses that produce more money and it takes labor to make that equation work. So everyday people get paid.

If you tax the "wealthy," small and large corporations they will do 1 or 2 things.

1. Raise prices to offset the tax.
2. Cut their labor force to offset the tax.

Both of these scenarios are bad for consumers and if you are employed by a company, some people will lose thier job.

There is a well supported theory that says lower taxes keeps more money in consumers pockets, thus we have more to spend. And in turn as we spend more, companies make a profit, higher more people, make more products, and the government gets more taxes from more people working.

If the taxes go efficiently towards a common good which government can supply better/more efficiently than the individual, then yes. Think of roads, sewer systems, police, etc. Or waging war to protect its people on invasion or other threat. (The NRA would love to think that we would just all pick up our guns and shoot invaders up; but in modern warfare? How many individuals would be able to deal with bombing airplanes? Or tanks? Or heat-seeking missiles? Or collect enough intelligence to do anything effective at all?)

The problem lies in the fact that government is rarely efficient in actual practice; it simply gets bigger, and more complex as more people are added and find more things for it to do. Government is also often swayed by special interests that may or may not be to the best common good. Politicians love to add pork projects which make their own constituents happy, at the expense of others. Some may be useful/neccessary, but some may be a poor return on the investment or inefficient and wasteful, or simply unnecessary.

no there isn't a positive to higher taxes. liberals just want higher taxes so they can spend it away on whatever programs they want that wont work. Or...just give it away for free to illegals in this country.

sure it gives them more money for entitlement programs that they pass and we all have to pay for. In fact the wealthiest get hit the hardest as they already pay 60% of the taxes and now they want more. B____ L S___T

Querious
It doesn't. Most arguments are for taxes being beneficial in ideal circumstances. We are already taxed too heavily through inflation among other ways, and spend far too much, more than the rest of the world, on the military and failing foreign adventures that mostly serve to protect the interests of the very rich at the expense and with the blood of the poor.

There are no positives to gifting money to unaccountable organizations whose main goal in life is to get bigger, more powerful, and pay people for life.

Every dollar spent on every tax, is one less dollar to create a job, fix the energy problem, get an education or these days, less dollars to eat & heat your house.

If bigger government, more spending & higher taxes were the solutions, we all would have butlers and live in mansions.

Americans inability to understand business & world economics, coupled with our laziness, under education and massive debt, will destroy our country. Sooner than most think.

In January, I predicted this "crises", and wrote a 360 blog entry concerning it too.

Now, I predict, that there are going to be food riots in this country within a year.

Picture it, as that is the picture of a third world country.

And, sadly, I believe it will happen. But not to my family, because I am smart enough to prepare and understand the reasons why this is happening.

Hopefully, you all will get smart too. Sooner, rather than later, would be the time.

Depends how its used. Is it for frivolous programs that insane and irresponsible Congress people come up with or is it to start paying off the $10+ Trillion that we owe the Chinese. The interest payments are killing us.

briefly the funds from taxes are used to pay for things like social grants and old age pensions. the money is also used to build public infrastructure. we all know that no business person in his/her right mind would invest in building roads and repairing those that need it. it is the government that assumes that responsibility and use the tax money. the building of public schools, hospitals and all that

It helps to pay for social programs without the govt going into as much debt. More debt is generally considered to be bad for future economic growth.
