How does the irs pick people to audit?

They have a template that gives normal "averages" for people in different income groups. If your claimed deductions are out of wack, that flags your report for audit.

Also, math errors, and failure to include required documents will flag one's report.

It's up to an IRS agent to actually select you out of millions of "flagged" reports. So, it may be random, that you get selected over others. They don't have time or resources to audit everyone, something like 3% or less.

If you've been audited before, you report may show up on top, because of abuse of the system too.
That's what I've learned over many years, hearing this from my parents oo.

Certain deductions are flagged by the gov't. Deductions like: Boats, 2nd homes, unusual contributions, really high incomes, etc. Your odds of getting audited are very slim.

It's usually random, but also if your return has 'raised some red flags', like all of the sudden your salary goes way down, but your job hasn't changed, or you suddenly have a ton of deductions that seem 'suspicious'.

There are certain areas where fraud is known to be common, so a large number of returns are looked at. These might be things like claiming EIC, or home office deductions.

Each return is scored against values which the IRS keeps very confidential. If your score is high in this process, you are likely to get audited.

Finally, some are chosen totally randomly.
