angelajock | How early can I file? Weird tax question...PLEASE HELP!!? |
In 2007 I worked in Iraq for 6 months. I came home and did my taxes.
My income for that 6 months was around 64,000. I filed federal, not state.
I am currently a student and college and I need to do the FASFA.
My income is NO WHERE near 64,000 for 2008. How early can I file my taxes, so it reflects my 2008 income?
I need financial aid for college and if I use my 2007 tax returns I will get no financial aid.
I know its a weird question, help!

You cannot file a 2008 return until January 2009. |

I see your problem. You want to file the FAFSA early but dont' want it to reflect the much higher earnings you had last year.
If you still need aid for this school year (2008-2009), I don't think there's a way to file for the current year based on your current income. Perhaps there's a way to file based on estimated income but this will have to wait until year-end - you'll need a full-year paycheck since you don't yet have your W-2. Your financial aide department is also being generous by waiting until aide is applied to assess charges for the current school year. Most schools give until August and then you're out of luck.
Generally you're eligible for a stafford loan regardless of income levels. That may have changed since I was last in school (2007) since the credit markets have tightened up. You will get more aid next year, though, since your income has fallen.
And I'm glad you survived Iraq. Terribly messy place to work. |

You can mail in your return, if you have all the forms you need and all of your tax info, as of January 1, 2009, not before. The IRS won't start accepting efiled returns until mid-January. |

You can file a paper return as soon after Jan 1st as you have all of your documentation together. You generally can't e-file until about the 2nd week of January. |

January 1 or as soon as you get your W-2s, whichever comes later. |

You have no choice but to use your 2007 tax info. It's messed up but you have to do it for the year before. I have filled out the FASFA a few times. You are probably going to have to wait untill 2009 before you can use 2008 tax info. They will catch you if you lie and you will have to pay back anything they give you. |

The IRS starts accepting returns for processing on about January 12 to 15 each year. If you e-file before then, they won't process it. You can't even get the software or the paper forms to do it until December. |

January 1st. You probably wont have your W2 yet so you will have to use the last pay stub of the year, and if you find something you forgot about or get an interest statement in the mail you'll have to amend your return. You might have to ask around a little too, because some tax preparers are picky about having the W2. (I'm one of the picky ones, I like to see the source documents for a tax return I prepare. ) But your pay stub would probably be enough. If I knew you and you told me your circumstances, i would probably go ahead and do it. |

I looked on the IRS site with no success- I did find a contact page that you can browse your local IRS office, or call a national number for assistance. They'll be able to give the real answer anyway, and be able to provide you with the proper forms, etc. In this case, I suggest go straight to source. |
