How good is the IRS at finding people who didn't file their Taxes?
I Know someone who didn't file 5 years ago. She didn't think she had...she was wrong. The statute of limitations is 10 years, it's been 5. Despite me telling her otherwise, she wants to wait it out and hope for the best. How likely is it that they're going to find her?
Additional Details
She was in HS at the time. Made about 6K, may have even had a refund comming to her.

Very Good. They found me after 2 years.Happily I only owed $100,which with interest and penalties ended up in $200.I paid and moved on. I have a friend who didn't file 3 years ago. They haven't send her a notice yet.But when she went to the IRS to ask about her status, they had her information of file. They knew she didn't file.I don't know what they were waiting on,maybe they were waiting for more time to go by and accumulate more penalties and interest.

They don't find everyone who evades taxes, But they're pretty good at it, and getting better.......

If she owed $100, she probably won't be at the top of their list and will probably get away with it. If she owed $30,000....... ?????

choteau
If she filed for and received the rebate payment last year then the IRS has her now. What do you think was the point of that incentive payment anyway? Now the IRS has over a million new names of people who have not filed returns.

If she's been filing correctly since then, she's probably OK. If she hasn't been, watch out.

she can run but she can't hide for long. People can be sent to prison for tax evasion.

PGILNIKT
I know a person who hasn't filed taxes in like 13 years and well...he's not in jail, at least. I wouldn't suggest messing with the government though.

Okay Nevermind

If she's single and not making a bunch of money, they'll just send a stupid "shame on you" letter and that's about it. If she has family and brings in a lot of money, they'll bring down the ax.

She is not in trouble unless she owes.
