Run, don't walk to your nearest store and buy it today!
I used it, the first time, about 15(?) years ago, when I worked off my then-current receipts, and the previous years' return (prepared by my accountant). That year, the accountant and I came up with the same results, and I have not looked back.
I like it because you can "model" with it, i.e., what if I change a particular number? You see instant results as your tax/refund is displayed constantly, and dynamically changes with every entry.
So, what if I put money in my IRA before the deadline? Bingo! You see the tax difference.
Also, the program walks you through with an in-screen interview, such as, your name, SSAN, do you have kids, how many, do you work, where, do you own a home, own a rental, etc., etc., etc.
When the interview is finished, every form you need is selected (and filled out!)
It prints the forms, files ELECTRONICALLY, with Direct Deposit, transfers Federal data to your State form, and transfers last year’s date to the new version every year. Every time you start the program, it checks the website for updates, and there is an immense amount of on-line help – complete Tax Codes with explanation – in the program
Note: I prefer the Premier edition. I have small business expenses.
I've made a couple of interpretive mistakes in the past, but I have used the program to file amended returns, and I am thoroughly convinced that TurboTax is a wonderful resource, primarily because YOU begin to understand what your finances are all about.
I have one other recommendation. Sign up for the local H & R Block tax class. It's optimized to your state, and while it's designed to teach you to qualify to be a licensed tax-preparer in your state (not a bad thing), it's a comprehensive overview to the tax code that 95% of America uses. Do that once and you will be set for life.
Taxes are all about paying what you should, and keeping the rest. There are many, many ways to reduce your taxable income - LEGALLY. |

We used once or twice many years ago. It was OK. We did it in 2000 and 2001. It is very simple and it seemed to cover basic.
Another thing to consider, and we used this for 4 years is H&R block online services. There might be a small charge for this, however it seemed more simple than Turbo Tax to me. I thought it was a free service, (It has been many years), however if you chose there was a small fee to have a H&R block representative to check everything as well. That really was not necessary because if you missed something the program denied you to file until you fix the problem areas. You could also do the e-file with quick return.
We now have a small business, and we use a local CPA now. If we ever close the business, I would likely go back to H&R block.
Just do a search, I believe it was HRblock.com |
