How is it possible that some people have tens of thousand dollars in IRS debt?

They spend all their cash, so when an assessment comes from the IRS they have no reserve for it.

Doctor Deth
usually - they are probably self employed and made what they thought was good money, but didn't pay any estimated taxes, spent the money and got whacked at tax return time

Usually people who owe that much had their own business and didn't pay their tax to the IRS - sometimes they didn't pay in the amounts withheld from their employees' paychecks.

Penalties and interest, the miracle of compounding!
Like Wesley Snipes, they make big bucks and don't file. . . .
They file and get big EIC payments which they are not entitled to, and don't repay.....
They're self-employed and don't report income, don't do quarterly estimated payments, don't file returns, don't pay tax due. . . . . . . .

Simple, they didn't pay their taxes.

Makes you wonder, doesn't it? Apparently, they just don't file for years, then finally get caught. Or, they falsify their returns and get audited, then slapped with additional tax, interest and penalties.

Ms. Angel..
of course, and some owe over 100K. and of course IRS wants all the money ASAP, can't blame IRS, because if some one owes IRS that much imagine how much more they owe else where.

Your employer pulls tax off your employment at source usually.

The big tax debtors are usually self employed persons that spend all their money before the tax bill is figured out.

if you short the irs at all, they will come back at you and screw your life up. they're like mobsters.
