I find this confusing. If you do not work, you do not contribute to the system because you have not "earned" income. Therefore there is nothing to tax correct? Or are we taxing social security benefit?
I have read comments that 40% of Americans don't work but get tax refunds. That seem absurd to me so I am seeking education or clarification. |

Read the articles again. Around 40% of people who work don't pay any income tax (get back anything withheld for income tax) and many of those get a refund of more than they paid in.
If a person didn't work, and didn't pay anything in, they don't get a refund. |

are you referring to the obama tax plan? it does appear to have some loose ends. here is what i found at cnsnews.
By using these refunds, Obama is able to claim that he is giving a tax cut to 95 percent of households, although only 62 percent of households pay any income taxes at all. This means that Obama’s tax plan calls for giving money to some households that do not pay taxes |

Plenty of low wage earners and social security recipients file tax returns just so they can claim the earned income tax credit which gives them a check for larger than they pay. Some on SSI also do this. Those 300 stimulus checks that Congress called tax rebates also went to people that do not pay income tax. |

Yea ! It's called Welfare. Another way for the working to pay for the less willing to get off their a**.
I don't know of a way but I am sure some one has figured a way to do it and gets away with it. |

They don't.
The working poor either receive everything back that they have paid in or more than they paid in due to the Earned Income Tax Credit.
If they are not working, they receive nothing. |

People who are on SSDI or social security are required to file a tax return every year. As a matter of law with the amount of people who is supported on that benefit certain amount of personal deductions are allowed. Based on those deductions, each tax payer either owes taxes or receives a refund. A refund is a small way that the government assist people with differing needs to get more benefit for the coming year since a single person receiving the same SS benefit would not get the same refund as a person supporting a family on four on that money. If you dont file then you do not benefit. |

Absurd? It is called helping the less fortunate. It is also called socialism. Vote for Obama and it will be even easier to have a fine life, and not have a job!
I am looking forward to the next 4 years. I will quit my job and let the rest of society, like Joe the Plumber, make it possible for me to keep on keeping on. |
