You have to get a new Tax disc the day after the old one expires. There is no such thing as waiting 14 days to renew it.

If the new tax is not in place by the time the old one expires you're likely to be getting a fine in the post. It's all automated now so the computer will simply issue one.
A friend of mine had a new tax disc but forgot to change it over and still got fined, they're ruthless!

In theory no time at all but I suspect that to keep things within perspective there is an unofficial period of grace. Certainly it is an "offence" not to display a current tax disc if the vehicle is on the road but I think that DVLA/VOSA are really more concerned of the 1million + vehicles that simply never pay rather than those that are a few days late. I have certainly "forgotten" to tax mine until a few days after the date and not had the £80 fine. I renewed on line last night if DVLA is monitoring!

I've just phoned the DVLA as I forgot to tax my car yesterday, they still give you a 14 day grace period, as long as it's not parked on a public highway.
