How long can parents claim their children as dependents?
I'm twenty-two years old and live with my parents. I go to school part time and work full time. On average I gross 30,000.00 a year.

I've never made a big issue before in regards to them claiming me as a dependent-so as long as they don't charge me for rent.

But legally-are they still allowed to do so? How long can they claim me as a dependent?
Additional Details
I think some of you are a bit misguided.

I do file for taxes and ALWAYS end up owing money-because I can't claim myself...So there is no issue in that area...I do file my taxes.

I'm asking if what my parents are doing is legal...I don't mind if they claim me as a dependent-hell, it's the least i can do since they don't charge rent. But, I would be afraid if they did an audit on my parents...but if what they're doing is legal...then no problems...

Qualifying Child & Qualifying Relative

According to the IRS guidelines The ability to claim a child as a dependent ends in the year that the child turns 19 yr old. OR if the dependent is a full time student they can continue to claim them until the dependent turns 25.

As long as the children are dependent on their parents. A mentally or physically handicapped child may be dependent on their parents for life. Someone who earns $30,000 is long out of the ballpark so your parent's can't claim you whether or not they charge you rent.

If you are not full time at least five months out of the year your parents cannot legally claim you.

busymomkaren
they can claim you as long as they provide you with over half your support. with a 30,000 job you probably are NOT their dependent. and you should claim yourself to get the best tax relief for yourself.

KRZY
My parents claimed me until I graduated college at 22. If they provide a certain amount to support you and you're still in school, they can claim you.

Jossey
To my understanding your parents are allowed to claim you till you become 21 years old and for that you have to still be in school. Hope this helps.

biggod
the age varies state by state. if we come out of legal things and check it depends upon parent too.

Hello,
It should be until you move out of there house.
Who cares about legally.

You should do the right thing and pay some rent.

Your Parents know as well as I do, that they can only claim you as a dependent until the age of 18.

Most parents have their children move out of their house at the age of 18, to start a new life of their own.

Since you are going to school, there is no problem still living with your parents.
But at your Full-Time job, you should have already filled out a
W-2 form with your employer, and you should be paying taxes on your own income.

IRS STATES: A dependent must be under 19 at the end of the year you are claiming. The IRS also lets you claim a dependents age 24 or under if they are enrolled in
school full-time.

Not only can our parents no longer claim you on their taxes, but you may also end up owing the IRS if you didnt have enough taken out of your pay .

As long as the parents provide for more than half of the dependents and as long as the dependent is under age and cannot support themselves--the parents can then claim them as their dependents.

when they are in college as long as they don't claim themselves and file.

Boy K
The age varies by state. In my state, they are allowed to claim you until you're twenty-four.
