kuzich.rm | How long do I have to file my taxes? |
I'm pretty sure that if the IRS owes you money on your taxes then you don't have to have them in by April 15th. I think you have like 3 years to file if they owe you. My question is, can someone verify this? And do you need to do anything special to file past April 15th if they owe you, like submit an extension? |

Today is the last day to get your taxes in the mail. Anything after today will not be filed. |

Today at midnight is the final for 07 taxes. You still need to file and extension if you will not have them out by today. If you have a return that you will have a refund on you need to get them filed. Also, if you want to receive the stimulis tax of 600.00 you have to file by the deadline. you will not get it if you file an extension...Why would you want to give away your money? |

The consequences differ depending on whether you owe the IRS money or the IRS owes you a refund.
If You Are Getting a Refund
This is one of the great little secrets about the tax law. If you have a refund coming — as more than two-thirds of taxpayers do every year — then there is no penalty for failing to file your tax return by the deadline, even if you don't ask for an extension.
That's not to say there aren't darned good reasons for filing on time, though, even if you have a refund coming:
You can't get your money back until you file, so you should file as soon as you can to get your money as soon as possible.
If you are eligible for a government rebate (stimulus payment) as a result of the 2008 Economic Stimulus Plan, you can't receive it until you file your 2007 return.
The statute of limitations for the IRS to audit your return starts at the later of the original due date or when you actually file your return. So, the sooner you file, the sooner the clock starts ticking.
Some rather arcane elections must be made by the due date, even if you have a refund coming. This applies to a very tiny percentage of taxpayers. |

If you have a refund coming, you have until April 15, 2011, to file your tax return. If you wait a day beyond that date, you will have officially donated your refund to the US Treasury.
If you truly have an refund coming, no extension is required. But you should file an extension, in case you are wrong.
You don't have to file by today to receive the stimulus. They will send out stimulus checks for all qualifying returns filed by Oct. 15.
The longer you wait, the longer someone else has your money... |

If the IRS owes you money why would want to wait? |

You should file an extension if you aren't doing your return today.
If you are due a refund why in the world wouldn't you file now? |

Yes, it is true. If you have money coming back, you have 3 years to file, but why the hell would anyone wait to get their money back? And, no you don't have to file an extension if your getting money back. These wankers have no idea what they are talking about. |

If you e-file, you have until April 17th, 11:59pm to submit it (though if you wait that long and have computer difficulties, the IRS isn't going to forgive you). If you mail, you have until midnight tonight to file.
If you are owed money, you don't have to file on-time. The IRS doesn't care if you're late. You do have 3 years to claim your refund.
You don't exactly have to submit an extension. It's more of an issue that no one cares what you do because they'd rather just hold onto your money for longer. The penalties for not filing an extension or for filing late all apply to taxes owed, so if you're getting a refund, nothing actually happens. However, not filing an extension and filing late can get your social security number flagged by the IRS for more scrutiny in future years. |

It is not 3 years. An extension is for 6 months. |

you still have to submit an extension |
