How long do i need to keep my tax return files?
I keep all the tax returns since I started working but they are piling up and I wonder how long do i need to keep these files in case of an audit?

veggie_mann
My accountant advised me to keep them for up to seven years, especially if you own your own business.

unicorn
You should keep your tax return files for a minimum of 3 years for regular tax returns and a minimum of 7 years if its a business or it includes business income on your tax return.

mjs5116
if you have not understated your income by 20% keep 5 years

Big Woof
Unicorn is the only one who has it right. The IRS cannot go back further than three years unless they can prove intent to defraud the IRS of greater than $10k. And no, HR Block does not keep any records longer than three years.

7 years, unless you file with H&R Block. They will keep them for you!!

Andy
7 years, because if there is ever a problem or you get audited they will go back that far
