How long does it take for the tax office to sort out your details so as not to have to pay emergency tax?

Additional Details
emergency tax is when you pay extra tax becauce the tax office has,nt processed you N I details by the time you recieve your wages. (I think, please correct me if I am wrong)

It all depends on how much information the tax office holds on your employment history, and whether that is complete. It may have to write to former employers, or contact you if you have not been passing P45s from one job to another. It is also possible that the tax office has sent out queries to which you or your former employers have not replied. I am sorry, but your question is like asking "how long is a piece of string?".

mischievous
It all depends upon whether they have lost your records

It can take quite a while and remember that you may not automatically recieve any overpayment unless you apply for it, when you get your P60 at the end of April work out your tax and you will see if you have paid too much, it is quite easy to do.

If it becomes a problem, talk to them or write to them. I have been pleasantly surprised by the Inland Revenue - ripped off, sure, but that's not their fault. My tax refund arrived with 2 weeks of submitting my on-line tax return. That's pretty good.

i would say about a month, you get the money back from emergancy tax anyway, my hubby had it and it ended up he didnt have to pay tax for about 8 weeks because his pay wasnt very high!

hi, it depends on your employer aswell as your tax office. i'd phone or visit your tax office to make sure they have all your correct details for this year. they need to know all your pay and tax for the year and what you were doing if there are any gaps in your employment of ten weeks or more. after they have all this they can issue you a code (and your employer). depending on what's being printed at the time this may come quickly or take a few days. when your employer gets the code they should implement it and you should get any money you are owed back through your wages ( in the next month or so). make sure with your HR department that they do this. also when you get your next p60, in april/may, contact the revenue again to make sure you paid the correct tax.

i used to work for the revenue, left two years ago, but i think this is correct. hope that helps!

mine was sorted by the next monthly pay day.

Months.

Lazy buggers who only work 9 til 5 Monday to Friday with an hour for lunch. And as it's now silly season don't expect any of the buggers to actually be doing any work.
