How long should i keep my payslips and P60's?
i have payslips and P60's from as far back as 1996 and i'm wondering if there is a point when you can shred them safely without the inland revenue coming after you?

All the answers about 6 years above are accurate if you are in business.

If you are simply an employee and have your own payslips and P60s you are only required to keep them until the first anniversary of 31 January after the tax year in question (longer if you submit any returns late).

HMRC can only look into older records if they find any fraud or negligence on your part.

So, as long as you are honest, you should keep info from:
2000/01 until 31 Jan 2003
2001/02 until 31 Jan 2004
2002/03 until 31 Jan 2005
2003/04 until 31 Jan 2006
and so on.

If you are reluctant to throw them out, shred the payslips but keep the P60s as proof of each year's earnings.

No dont do it they know you will, put them away keep them.I know it sounds boring but i had a friend who went to get his pension and they said he owed national insurance payments from way back, he still has no pension and has to do security work just to make ends meet, dont forget if you have got it the bloody government will take it off you and still keep taking even when your dead !!!.

scorpion queen
I've kept mine since 1995 - my first job.... awww its all sentimental and sad..

Petey
Hang onto them forever.... I've just been asked by the Inland Revenue for a P60 from a previous year as they think they made an error. I can barely remember the year in question, let alone what I was doing then, so keep all the paperwork in case you're asked to produce it at a later date.

Pat
Inland Revenue says 6 Years

MaxD148

are they eating any meat keep them

The Inland Revenue can look into your tax affairs for 6 years + the current year.
Therefore you need to keep any tax documents you have for Tax Year 2000/2001 onwards.

Bedmechanic
I'd keep them for at least 7 years as that's how far back the inland revenue can get you.

Typical that you can only go back 5 years with them though.

Flash Gordon
they are proof about payment of NI contributions. I suggest you hang onto them to prove pension entitlement in the event of dispute

The Inland Revenue usuallly expects you to keep these documents for at least 6 years so I'd say you should be safe shredding the 1996 documents. You can confirm by ringing the Inland Revenue and asking them.

jaynie
I never keep payslips, i bin them the minute i get them as it would be more tat lying around. I never knew you were to keep them, news to me.

purple_duck_uk
My payslip has printed on it : "Important document, retain for at least three years".

I think the legal requirement is 5 years though, so I've no idea what that's all about!
