Usually ten years.
You better really keep that stuff, because you can be made to prove that you paid tax. Don't assume the IRS has the records. I know- I'm paying off a $1,800 debt to VA IRS for taxes I already paid, but didn't keep my documents. Uggh! |

Generally, federal income tax returns can be audited for up to 3 years after filing, up to 6 years if criminal fraud is suspected and permanently if civil fraud is suspected. Therefore, people recommended 4-7 years. However, you should check the following website: http://www.etaxmatters.com/etaxmatInfoRet.php. It has a clear recommendation on specific items. It suggests some items (e.g., W-2) to be kept forever, while some items (e.g., 1099) to be kept for 7 years. |

H&R Block recommends 5 years.
BUT you should keep them forever, just in case something happens at some point you have them and can pull them up.
I mean do you really trust the IRS to not screw something up at somepoint? Just in case they do and you're the one that it happens to you'll have documentation in your favor. |

There's really no reason to do away with them, they are significant pieces of paper that can affect all sorts of things, from bankruptcies to divorce filings. I'd keep them, I mean they are normally no bigger than a folder anyway, why bother throwing them out? |
