MonkeyBrains | How long should it take the Inland Revenue to get back to you about a tax claim? |
My fella paid too much tax last year, they told me so on the phone when I told 'em the code on his P60 so I sent it off to the relevant office as they asked with all his details and why we were sending it etc. Now 2 and half months later, am wondering what's going on here?? |

Some of the large processing offices are five months behind but most of the smaller areas are working post only 2 weeks old or less.
Assuming the post was sent to the correct tax office, i.e. not your local one but the tax office that deals with your current employer, I would have expected you to get an intial response for more info or an assessment by now.
Get your fella to give them a call, they will not speak to you unless he is there to authorise, and ask for an update.
Please note that the Inland Revenue will not guarantee a repayment over the phone but the only confirmation will be when an assessment is made and you receive your calculation. |

If they owe you money it will take weeks or even months before they get back to you.
If you owe them money it usually takes them a day or two before they get back to you.
Call them and ask them what is happening with your claim. If you don't push it...neither will they! |

Don't bother ringing or visiting your tax office tomorrow (31 Jan) to sort it out...... most HMRC staff are on strike.
To be fair, generally HMRC deal with post if it has the correct reference on it. If you don't add your National Insurance Number or UTR to correspondence HMRC cannot do anything with your post and it will just wait around until someone has the time to search for you.
Moral behind the story? Always put your reference on letters and if you do telephone make sure you get the full name of the person that you are dealing with. |

Go down there and sort it out in person. At the same time you can update their filing system and sack the one who sees to mail. |

well good luck!
I had the same problem and handed in all my stuff and was told to expect to here something in 6-8 weeks. The best advice i can give you is to get your boyfriend to ring the centralised number and find out who is dealing with his case and to get their direct number and to ring them. They can say if they are working on his individual case and if there any problems and if they require anything else. If they have everything he should ring them 1-2 times a week to bug them in to completing the claims form. he should point out how long he has been waiting for a response. This does work as this is what i had to do. Going down to the relevant office may work if the department who is dealing with your case is there other wise they might not be very helpful.
Unfortunalty i think the HMRC is slow and a unhelpful place so be firm if they keep fobing you off!!
It will have to be your fella to ring as they will not talk to someone else other his tax issues. |
