How many allowances should we claim on our W-4?
We are a married couple, both working, one makes 33K, the other 60K. We have a house (real estate taxes and mortgage interest), and no kids. We file married/joint.

For 2008, we're getting a whopping 5K back (because we didn't change our W-4s when we bought the house in late 2007). I do not want this giant refund to happen next year! I don't want to owe either. I'd like to have a $500 or so cushion, so that we don't have to owe, but I want more in my paycheck.

Any help would be appreciated.

Considering that you have pretty significant income, it would probably be in your best interest to speak with an accountant or financial planner. They will be able to review your income, expenses, etc. and give you much more detailed and comprehensive tax planning advice than anyone here.

I would add 1 to each of your W4s. That would require zero dollars spent on a accountant/cpa, and would affect next year. If next year is too big again, add another.

I review my tax withholding every June, Oct, and Nov to make sure I'm on track for taxes due.

You would be allowed to claim 0 exemptions but you should discuss it with a tax professional to make sure you're having enough withheld at that level.

each 1

Add 4 or 5 to the allowances you are claiming now if nothing else is changing much.

You should each claim yourself (1) on your W4

When you do your w-4 take the tax liability from the 2008 return and calculate the number allowances with that. That will allow to take home more of your money throughout the year since the IRS does not pay interest to you on your refund.

Through out the year, claim 2, then file taxes married but filing separately.
