mleonard130 | How many years back do we need to save our tax return documentation? |

The general recommendation is to keep the records for seven years, but to keep the returns themselves FOREVER. You never know when you may need them.
When you dispose of the information, make sure to shred the documents as thoroughly as possible. Even old confidential information can be very dangerous in the wrong hands. |

This is in response to super_ez1 answer.
Generally, to claim a refund, the Form 1040X (PDF) must be received within three years after the date you filed your original return or within two years after the date you paid the tax, whichever is later.
From the IRS website.

As long as you aren't committing any sort of fraud, you should keep for 3 years. If you are audited and they find an error they can go back that far to look for more errors. If they deem it to be fraud (you made the "error" on purpose) they can go back forever. |

The IRS can go back 3 years to audit you. If they find mistakes or fraud, they can go back 7 years. |
