How many years do you have to file your tax returns?
I'm scared. I haven't filed tax returns in a long time and was wondering if I could still file them, even though a few years have gone by

Depending on your income, filing status and amount of withholding you may not have reason to scared. You may file a return for any past year for which you had a requirement to file. If you were a wage earner in all of those years it is possible that the government owed you money. If that were the case there would be no penalty for not filing. You would not be able to get any refund more than three years past the due date. If you were to determine that you might just owe money and they have not contacted you you may want to leave the sleeping dog alone. It is always wist to seek professional advise in these matters.

Sure you can, but if you had a refund coming before th4 2005 tax year, you're too late to collect it. File your back returns as soon as you can. You are far from the only one who's ever done this, so don't panic, just get it done.

If you had refunds coming for the years you didn't file, there won't be any penalties for those years.

Veritatum17
You should file a tax return every year.
The IRS won't bother you, though, unless you owe money in taxes. Filing a tax return when you're owed a refund just gives you more money.

You must file tax return if your income exceeds the filing requirement. There is no time limit. If you owe tax, you will pay with interest and penalty.

If you have not filed for couple of years, and you have not heard from IRS, you may have refund on those tax returns. To get a refund, a return must be filed within 3 years of the due date.

As a matter of general policy, IRS will demand only six years worth of delinquent returns unless there is evidence of fraud. (Negligence is not fraud.) Unless you are being asked for more, just file 2001 to date.

you should be scared

Writer_B
You can file anytime. You'll face a penalty for late payment.

The fact that you're coming to them voluntarily is much better than having them track you down.

Step 1: Hire a CPA

Step 2: File all your back taxes

Step 3: Get ready for TONS of penalties and interest if you owed money. If you were due a refund you probably can't get it because there's a time limit to claim them.

Yes, you must and can, the IRS will eat you alive of course but it beats going to jail for tax evasion!

I would check with the IRS web site.

I"m sure they have a FAQ section and other people have the same question as you do.

You can file them even if they are 20 years past due.
Go to www.irs.gov to find the number to call to order prior year forms.
