You are subject to normal audits by the IRS for the three years prior to the current tax year. If the IRS suspects fraud there is no statute of limitation on tax fraud. Most states have laws that require you to keep any "business" record for seven years. I am working on a case that is over fifteen years old and has nothing to do with the IRS but tax records are the best available evidence of the persons income. You could keep them for fifty years and never need them but if you do it could save you a lot more than the cost of a couple more file cabinets. I would keep them until four years after you die. |

Assuming you're speaking as an individual, I would recommend keeping paperwork for only 4 years, but your actual returns indefinitely. The statute of limitation is 3 years, but if the IRS feels like it, they can waive the statute and go back further than that. However, they are under a greater burden of proof at that point, so why make it any easier for them by keeping those records?
Make sure that when you dispose of your records you SHRED them. |

You should be OK with 3 years worth of records. |

I think it is 7 years to keep your tax returns. I usually go way overboard when saving stuff. I have every single one of mine....dating back to the '80's.....I know, should purge them but have a huge 4 drawer filing cabinet...... |

Only seven years are required in the event of an audit. Make sure to shred, not toss, when you weed them out. |
