Once you start earning over £39,825 then you're in the 40% bracket. |

In the U.S.
2007 Tax Rates - Single Taxpayers - Standard Deduction $5,350
10% 0 to 7,825
15% 7,826 to 31,850
25% 31,851 to 77,100
28% 77,101 – 160,850
33% 160,851 – 349,700
35% Over 349,700 |

£39825 is correct, but as long as you are on a normal personal allowance tax code, ie 522L for 07/08. As of 6th April, personal allowance changes to 543L, ie £5435. Also, the tax rate bands will be (subject to budget change):
Under £34,600 = 22%
Over £34,600 = 40%
This is the amount over and above your allowance. So if your allowance is £5,435 next year, you will start to pay 40% tax when you hit £40,035 pa, or £3,336.25 pm. |
