Not a lot. In case you hadn't realised, taxmen are like vampires. If you have money, they want some of it.

its something like less than £100 a week so you should be getting taxed
are you on emergency tax?
does your tax code begin with BR?

even though its your first job and its temp you still have to pay tax
welcome to the real world!

Your tax allowance for the year is probably £5200 (tax code 522), which means you can earn £5,200 per year before paying tax, this is calculated week by week or month by month according to how frequently you are paid.

You will start paying tax after the first £100 per week, at (if I remember) 10%, 20% and 23% - anything you earn over £39,000 will be taxed at 40%.

Further more there is National Insurance at 10.5%, but I am not sure of the threshold before that kicks in.

£80 stoppages look about right, but is about £20 less than my rough calculations above!

If over a 12 month period you earned less than say £4500 you will get a full tax rebate but not untill you provide full details of your earnings April to March of that year. (seriously)

However if you are an immigrant you will also be given a free house, possibly free dental care, free school meals for your kids and a free plane ticket to bring the rest of your family
over here.(not so seriously)

Pay your taxes dude!

tedrfandthedog
About 6K per year before tax, I think.

Your first £100 pw is tax free, but if you have only just started work, you have 6 mths of tax free allowances rolled up. You need to ask your employer for a form P46 - sign this to state this is your first job and he should put you on code 522L and you will be refunded through your pay. Any probs, ring HMRC. Take charge of your tax affairs, dont expect others to do it for you.
EDIT: Why thumbs down for a perfectly correct and sensible answer?
Wilfred - I have not said you dont pay tax for the first 6 mths. What I am saying is that as the questioner has not worked for 6mths this tax year, all those tax free allowances are available to him now. This have to be used up on top of the £100 tax free per week he is now due. I was HMIT for 26 yrs, so I do know what I'm talking about!
