Depends where you live. It's not actually paid to the 'government', it's paid to your local council. It's not a straight percentage of anything. It's calculated by what band your house falls into. |

it al depends HOW many muppets are FOOKING around in the COUNCIL !! |

It depends where you live. It's not a % rate, but a fixed amount per year which varies owing to the estimated value of the house you live in.
Ring your local Council and ask them. Or look on their webpage (usually in the format www.yourcouncilname.gov.uk) |

it depends on what band your property is in, but it is way too much |

It all depends on what band you live in. A, B, C, D. Each band has its own set amount. It also depends on whether you live in a Flat, Bungalow or a House. If you go to your local borough council they will be able to tell you. Also if it makes things easier you can arrange to pay it weekly, fortnightly, monthly. Make sure you keep a record of all payments you make as my experiences of the council have been where documents go missing. |

Too much.all depends on how much the property you live in is worth.Goes up in bands from band A to K i think.A being the cheapest.Still too much whatever way you look at it. |

council tax is not paid to the government. It is paid to the local council. It is not a percentage of anything. Each property is given a rating. Each rating is assessed a certain amount of council tax a year. The amount will vary from property to property and council to council. You do not seem to understand the system. |

The starting point
The basis of valuation for a dwelling which is not used for any business purpose is the amount which, subject to certain assumptions, it would have sold for on the 'open market' by a 'willing vendor' on 1 April 1991.
'open market' means a market where the property is offered openly with adequate publicity being given to the sale. Please note that if your property was purchased under a discount scheme (such as 'Right to Buy') this does not fall within the definition of 'open market' and therefore will not apply.
'willing vendor' means someone who sells the property as a free agent and not someone who is forced to do so.
Why 1 April 1991?
Council Tax came into effect on 1 April 1993. However, the process of valuing every domestic property in England and Wales for banding purposes started some time before this. Therefore, we had to adopt a valuation date prior to 1 April 1993 so that all properties would be valued on a common footing.
Even if your property was built after 1 April 1993, we must band the property according to what we think that its value would have been on 1 April 1991.
This means that recent sale prices are not necessarily a good guide to the correct band for a property.
Find out all the details at Valuation Office Agency website:-) |
