How much do you have to donate to charity before you can claim it on taxes?
I donated a bunch of baby items to a local low income day care center. They wrote out a donations slip for me and the total is an estimated total of 400.00. Is that enough to claim? I thought I read in the book that you have to have at least 600.00 to be able to claim anything. Does this sound right? It's all so confusing!

It would have to be enough for itemized deductions to over take your standard dedcution. You can claim 5$ if you want, but it's not going to be worth anything if you are using standard dedcutions.

The Spaceman is correct. I am too lazy to type all that out, plus I haven't looked at this years' deductions.

Ok, the answer isn't completely simple.

There are different ways to reduce taxable income:
(1) Adjustments (student loan interest, IRA contributions...)
(2) Exemptions (which increase with the number of dependents)
(3) Deductions

Charatible donations fall into the category of "deductions". You can either take a one-size-fits all deduction of $5,700 single $11,400/married, or you can itemize. If your total list of deductions (including the $400) is less than $5,700, then you take the standard deduction of $5700 rather than itemizing your deduction. Long story short: your deductible receipts need to exceed $5700 (or $10,700 if you are filing as married) for them to mean anything.

Its not whatyou donate, its a matter of do you have enough deductions to itemize..

Brother Otter
You can claim any amount. But whether it's worth it on your Federal return depends on your AGI. It has to exceed the Standard Deduction.
However, it may be worth it to keep track of all your charitable donations for State taxes. Some states count any charitable giving.

There's no limit. If you donate $20, you can claim it.

In Australia if you donate $2 or more to a registered charity and have a receipt you can claim it

Amy B
Any amount can be written off, providing you file a long form (in the US). You will need to have that receipt if the items are worth $400 or more.

Pat
You can claim any amount. $400 is a pretty decent donation.

Judy1
You can only claim it if you itemize. If you do, you can claim it from the first dollar as a charitable dontribution.

One dollar or more

It depends on what country your in. A $600 minimum seems like alot.
I know that over here you can claim any amount as "charity" as long as you have a receipt for it.
