How much does it typically cost to get your taxes done at H&R Block?
I received a coupon in the mail for $25 off tax preparation at H&R Block. I'm wondering if they can offer such a significant discount how much it typically costs. I usually have my parents prepare my taxes for me but would like to start leaving them out of my finances if possible.

I'm a 25 year old, single woman if that makes any difference.

I work for H&R Block. If you're single, have no dependents, and no other forms, you'd be looking at about $53. It starts moving up once you start factoring in other things. Any dependents? Paid any student loan interest? Contribute to a traditional IRA? etc. etc. A friend of mine went in last year. he had 2 w2s, IRA contributions, and had paid some studdent loan interest. He would up with a bill of $83

Well, Jackson Hewitt will honor that coupon, and they both charge more than $100 for even a simple return as yours sounds like. There are many FREE online filings you can do, with a simple return. As you're 25, your parents can't claim you unless you earn less than $3500.
Go to www.irs.gov, free efiling. Be sure to print yourself a copy of your return. Most states offer free efiling on their website, but many of the free federal filing services charge for a state return.

it costs between 150.00 and 250.00 but you can do your own taxes for free if you have a simple return by using turbotax.com or on the irs.gov website under free e-file which starts on friday.turbotax is very easy to use and they walk you through the process.

There's no typical answer. It depends upon the complexity and time involved. Additionally each office sets their own prices. Most can give you a ballpark estimate once they review your circumstances and your records.

If you have a basic return with one or 2 W-2s and maybe a 1099 or 2 for bank interest you can use the IRS Free E-File system. There's a link on their home page. Probably 80% of Block's customers could go there and do it themselves for free.

Block would charge around $100 if you have a state return also, maybe a little less if it's just your federal. So even with the coupon it still costs a lot. You should be able to do it yourself for free.

I am a tad older and do a lot of itemization so mine averages around $150. Yeah, the best thing to keep in mind with ANY coupon; the more you get on the coupon, the more expensive the item is to buy. Ergo, if you are getting a $25.00 coupon, the service will cost you at least $75.00. Good luck!!

probably between $85-$275. i used to prepare taxes for customers thru my previous job and we charged people a ridiculous amount. i personally use taxact.com to file my own taxes and i have found them to be the best and the cheapest (free for federal, $13.95 for state). even for lots of my friends and family who dont know what they are looking at when it comes to taxes, the site is simple to follow. i would suggest not paying someone a chunk of your refund to have it done. also, h&r block gets your refund to you on a card that charges fees for the silliest things!

I have used H&R Block and they charged me around $200 or so. I came across Efile.com. They are offering Free Federal tax return which could save you some money. They also have a free online 1040 calculator as well. With this you can get an accurate range of what you will have to pay when everything is said and done.

Hope this helps!

The link to the calculator I found is listed below.

It varies - starting from $50 (federal only) or $75 including one state. If you are like most 25 year olds, you probably have a fairly simple return and are at or near the low end. It is probably a good idea to get started with Block while your return is simple so you have a comfort with them when you buy a house and have kids and all of a sudden your taxes are complex.

The thing that all the people who are going to tell you to free file or use Turbo Tax or something forget is that when you use Block, you will have somebody to help you when you are audited, and somebody to call during the off-season before you make any moves like buying a house or getting in or out of a 401-K or IRA and such.
