6.2% for fica
1.45% for medicare

total is 7.65% until wages exceed $97,500. Then it's medicare only.

SS tax is _not_ like income taxes ... it is not based on marital status or number of dependents (or being a dependent).

To find out the tax rate, when you get your paycheck:
divide the SS tax by your gross income ... the result you get
is the tax rate.

Gary
Social Security - .062 (6.2%)
Medicare - .0145 (1.45%)

Social security and medicare between them take 7.65% of your paycheck. Your employer also pays a matching amount.

bostonianinmo
Social Security is withheld at 6.2% of the first $97,500 (for 2007) in annual wages. Medicare is withheld at 1.45% of all wages.

A bit over 6% from the first $97,500 of your gross pay. Your employer contributes an equal amount. Marital status does not affect the amount.
