Otero | How much should I be deducted from my wages both for NI and as Income Tax? |
I though it should be around 20% altogether but I have been deducted 19.19 for NI and 55.80 as Income tax from 279 which works out something like 20% deduction as Income Tax and 7% for the NI. Is this normal or not? It is my first wages so I want to make sure there is no mistake. Thanks. Additional Details Furthermore, it seems I will not be getting proper wage slips but simply a wage envelope with my money inside it and the amount for total wages and deductions (no signature or anything else). |

QUICK ANSWER
Based on £279 paid for 1 week and assuming you're on week 1 normal tax code then you should pay...
Tax: £33.10
NI: £18.15
Although, if this is your very first wage, then you need to be placed on a cumalitve tax code which means that you should pay £0 tax if no other income has been made this tax year(complete a P46, hand into your payroll and ensure they pass it onto the inland revenue)
I have included a calculator in the sources below to help and also a good site that helps understand tax better.
THE BORING ANSWER.....
You can only get a rough guide by placing 20% deduction...it is slightly more complicated....
Your tax code indicates what your tax free threshold is e.g. if tax code is 414 then you will not be taxed up until £4140, after that you will be taxed 20% until your wages reach the next tax threshold £35k p.a. roughly at which point you get taxed at 40%
National Insurance also has a free amount before deductions.....are you bored yet??? I would be lol. |

phone up your tax office and ask them
sounds to me like you have paid too much tax if you paid 55.80 on earnings of 279! |

That sounds about right: 20% dedcution for tax on all earnings above £5400 (accross the year) then national insurance is around 8% or something, so it's probably right. Emergency tax is a lot higher, so you would be paying nearly half of your wages if you were on the wrong tax code. Check the tax code on your payslip, it should say 543L i think, then you'll know if it's right or not. |

Sounds steep, contact HM Revenue and Customs. |

I assume this is a weekly pay.
The NI is correct but the income tax does look a bit high (should probably be about £35 if you are on a normal tax code - 543L)
Do you have any other income? Do you still need to give your employer a P45 from last employment? If you have answered yes to either of these then this could be the reason why. If not, go see your HR dept. |

I think you should have paid £34.90 in tax and 11% NI. Ask who ever does the wages what tax code they have you on, you should have a coding of 543. You add a zero to this and that gives you your annual before tax allowance of £5435. This is for a single person. You take 5435 away from your annual wage and you pay 20% on balance. Only thing I am not sure about is if the NI payment comes off before taxis calculated. I believe it is as this allows the Gov to tax your pension in years to come. If you paid tax on full amount they would not be able to tax a pension. You will find that the amount of tax you pay will vary weekly as it is calculated on a sliding scale, ie, bits not taxed this week are added to next weeks. Hope this helps |

You need to sign the P46 to say this is your first job. Your payroll dept should then put you on 543L cumulative and refund the tax paid so far. This is your employers responsibility, not HMRC.
A pay envelope is fine as long as it itemises the deductions for pay and NIC - it does not need to be signed by anyone. |

Each person has a tax free allowance, normally around 5300 a year. This will be less if you have 'benefits' such as a company car, home lone, etc.
You will have a tax code, your tax free allowance is normally 10x the tax code number (assuming you have a L code).
The tax free allowance is evenly divided throughout the year and you pay 20% tax on the rest.
NI starts at around 7%, so this sounds about right. |
