How much tax would I pay on £30,000 a year?
i.e. how much would I have left to live on!

If you are on the standard tax code (522L, though this changes next week to 543L) you would have:
Gross per month £2500
NI: £227.26
PAYE: £431.77
Leaving you with £1840.97 net

From 6th April 2008 things are much [?] simpler for Income tax

The first £5500 approximately is tax free and the rest taxed at 20%. So you will pay approximately £5000 over the year.

And on top of that National Insurance [and your employer also pays NI]

You may feel that this is a lot but it enables society to pay for all the services that all of us use!
