kit | How much taxes does a 401 K take out? |
I recently got hired by a company that has a 401k. However, I didn't sign up for it yet because I don't know how much taxes (federal) they are going to take out. My hourly rate of pay is $14/hr. So, is it worth it or should I forget about it? |

There is no tax on a 401K when it is withheld. In fact it is subtracted from your pay before computing tax so your tax is actually less. Tax is paid when you take it out unless rolled into a traditional IRA.
If your company does any matching then invest at least that amount. Otherwise you are just turning down free money. |

A 401k comes from pre-tax dollars, in other words, contributing to a 401k reduces your taxable income (money contributed isn't counted when the gov't takes taxes out of your income), and accumulates in the account tax deferred. You pay taxes when the money comes _out_ of the 401k.
The idea is that in retirement, you will be earning less money and therefore in a lower tax bracket, and will pay less. Not to mention the entire time the money is growing in the account, it will be growing tax deferred.
If there's a company match, you should be contributing at least that much, since it's free money (the company puts in whatever you put in, up to a certain percentage). If you don't need the money _right now_, then it's a good idea to contribute at least the match. You should research more on 401k's yourself, so you know what your options are. |

Take out 15% now. You must be responsible for your own future as the govt cant pay for it. Take the max 15% out. |

This depends on how you set it up. 401K is not taxes, it's sort of like a long-term investment savings account. They will take a percentage out of your paycheck each week, what percentage is up to you. When you set it up you will tell them what kinds of accounts you want the money put into in order to accrue money - the options you have will be described when you are going through this process. You can talk to your employer to find out what your options are. I recommend opening a 401K if you are able to afford it, because it will put a lot of money in the long run towards your retirement, and you can't rely on social security anymore. |

A 401K SAVES you taxes, at least for now, it doesn't take out more. Depending on your W2 and how many hours you work, the amount you put in your 401K will actually only cost you around 80-85% of that amount in your take home pay. Example: if you put $20 a week in it, your take home pay will only be reduced about $16. You will pay taxes on the money later when you start withdrawing it. |

401k don't take out taxes;
They are tax shelter
you contribute part of your income
and that part of the income you
contribut is not taxable until you take it out
what is good about 401k is that the company
can match |

It is definitely worth it to contribute to your 401(K). If your employer matches, that is free money up front. Even if they do not, it usually only costs $70-$75 to contribute $100 to your 401(k). |

A 401k is a great way to save money for retirement. Any money you put into it will be pretax on your paycheck (they take the money for the 401k out and then tax what is left). If you have between 3 and 5% of your paycheck taken out you will likely not even notice the money is coming out and you will be saving for retirement!!! |

Most 401K's are taken out before your taxes. Which works out great for you now, but you will get taxed when you retire and you decide to use that money. |
